A ceramics studio based by the sea and run by local entrepreneur Gem Mordle. Gem runs “mud throwers” workshops, attends events and sells her handmade wares online. Homethrown ceramics are playful, irregular and simple. Drawing on simplicity, the organic shapes and textures are influenced by Scandinavian design.
We were asked by Gem to photograph her handmade items in a studio setting. We styled the ceramics with various props, mostly natural, to enhance the objects. We used coloured backgrounds to enhance the glazes and different finishes to the items. These were shot mostly for online use, marketing purposes and e-commerce website.
We captured the irregular shapes by adding graphical lines within the backgrounds. A soft “oatmeal” backdrop adds a nod to the Scandinavian “Hygge” movement, creating a cosy yet soft environment.
